Abstract: FIXATION OF TOURISTS FOR USING PREDOMINANTLY ONE FORM OF TRANSPORT (CAR) WITH SIMULTANEOUS PREFERENCE FOR A SOUTHERN JOURNEY DESTINATION, SAME TRAFFIC ROUTES (MOTORWAYS) AND TRAVELLING TIMES (JULY/AUGUST) LEADS DIRECTLY TO WELL-KNOWN TRAFFIC JAMS ON MOTORWAYS. COLOGNE RESEARCH GROUP PEOPLE IN TRAFFIC, SPONSORED BY TYRE MANUFACTURER UNIROYAL, CARRIED OUT AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION IN SUMMER MONTHS OF 1977 IN AN AREA OF TRAFFIC JAMS. THIS RESEARCH WAS CARRIED OUT TO INVESTIGATE HOW HOLIDAY TRAVELLERS GO THROUGH AND BEHAVE DURING EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES OF A HOLIDAY JOURNEY. THOSE TRAVELLERS WHO PULLED INTO REST AREAS AND LAY-BYS IN SELECTED AREA WERE QUESTIONED AND OBSERVED. THEIR LENGTH OF STAY AT VARIOUS RESTING PLACES WAS EVALUATED. A COMPLETE ANALYSIS OF CAR TOURING FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL VIEWPOINT WILL APPEAR IN APRIL 1978 AS VOLUME 27 IN SERIES THE HUMAN FACTOR IN TRAFFIC.
