Title: PRIORITIZATION OF URBAN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION TO MAXIMIZE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
Abstract: The objective of this study is to prioritize highway widening and lane-adding projects in Lafayette, Louisiana based on their potential impacts on the system performance. Particularly, the authors have examined five corridors and ranked them by the total VMT (Vehicle-Mile-Traveled) and VHT (Vehicle-Hour-Traveled) on the system network level. The study results indicate that the current project selection procedure employed by some transportation agencies may not be effective in reducing the traffic congestion and improving the area-wide transportation network performance. The finding of this research offers a technically sound alternative for the decision makers in arriving at a productive transportation improvement plan.
