Abstract: The present study considers the present state of conditions encouraging cycling as well as cyclists' wishes for the development of travel centres under design and construction in Tampere, Seinajoki, Lahti and Hameenlinna. The research material includes, for example, an inquiry aimed at cyclists and the counts of bicycles parked at the railway and bus stations of the above mentioned cities. In public transport, most feeder traffic trips are made by foot and a few per cent by cycling. The further a station is located from the centre of a city, the bigger amount of those parking at public transport stations continue their trip by the means of public transport. The length of a feeder cycling trip is mostly 3-4 kilometres, but light traffic connections to present stations are bad, especially, when a station is located in the centre of a city. Feeder cycling increases most in April, but there is a strong seasonal variation in cycling in different localities. More parking space for bicycles is needed at most transport stations. Present bicycle stands are problematic because of their lack of space, unsuitability for different types of bicycles and lack of possibility to lock a cycle frame. Most cyclists hope for more covered and guarded and/or lockers for parking and would also be ready to pay for safer parking, for example FIM 5/day. When developing public transport interchange more attention shall be paid, besides light traffic, to the amount and, especially, the quality of bicycle stands. Cycling must also be connected with other information and guidance systems of public transport. Development work requires more supporting information of the distribution of feeder traffic modes, the length of cycling trips and the wish of cyclists and other users of public transport interchange for cycling-related services.
