Title: CHINA SPENDS ITS WAY OUT OF CAPACITY PROBLEMS
Abstract: In absolute terms, China spends more money in railway investments than any other country on earth. Its current investment is nearly US$ 8.5 billion a year on its 2001-5 five year plan. The article recognizes the reasons for the amount of money spent: China is in a catch up situation trying to beat capacity problems caused by an ever-accelerating demand for rail transport, fueled by high levels of economic growth, unleashed by industrial liberalization. The article provides an overview of the five-year plan that will expand the total network length from 68,000 to 75,000 km.
