Abstract: THE BUCKLING BEHAVIOR OF LONGITUDINALLY AND TRANSVERSELY STIFFENED COMPRESSION FLANGES OF HORIZONTALLY CURVED BOX GIRDERS IS STUDIED ANALYTICALLY. AN EXPRESSION FOR THE TOTAL POTENTIAL ENERGY OF THE SYSTEM SUBJECTED TO NORMAL AND SHEARING STRESSES IS DEVELOPED CONSIDERING THE LONGITUDINAL STIFFNERS AS CURVED BEAMS. SOLUTIONS TO THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL ARE OBTAINED USING THE RAYLEIGH-RITZ METHOD. BUCKLING IN BOTH THE ELASTIC AND INELASTIC RANGES IS CONSIDERED. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED MAY BE USED FOR PROPORTIONING THE SIZES AND DETERMINING THE OPTIMUM LOCATION OF THE LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE STIFFENERS TO BE USED IN CURVED BOX GIRDERS. /FHWA/
