Abstract: This article takes a look at the Sanitation District No. 1 of Northern Kentucky and how they managed to incorporate a watershed-based approach to meeting Clean Water Act requirements for combined sewer overflows (SOs) and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) by constructing the Western Regional Conveyance Tunnel (an aerial bridge) over Willoughby Creek to route flows from central Boone County to a new treatment plant almost 7 miles away. This pipe bridge saves on both initial capital and future maintenance costs - along with the new Western Regional Water Reclamation Facility, the Tunnel is projected to reduce SSO volumes and eliminate numerous pump stations. Details of the tunnel's design and construction are presented here, including materials chosen for the pipe, as well as issues such as corrosion resistance.
