The impact of the structure on the efficient operation of a railway yard is discussed and the measures taken to alleviate some of the problems are described. A brief description is given of the launching truss and its operation and some details of the erection method. Mention is made of one asymmetrical span and the effect it had on the construction of the bridge; for example, it led to different supports for the end spans. The paper ends with a discussion of the problems inherent in the current tendering practices used for a complex structure for which there are many acceptable systems and methods available for construction. The improbability of the designer's choosing the exact process for construction that the successful contractor chooses is pointed out, and the problems that this will bring are explained. A first step towards a tentative solution is put forward. (TRRL)Read More
