Abstract: Amtrak, the national rail service, soldiers on despite cuts in the Bush Administration’s 2009 budget proposal. According to this article, Amtrak’s ridership reached a record high 25.8 million passengers in fiscal year 2007, compared to about 21.7 million in 2002. Ticket revenues also rose 11 percent between 2006 and 2007. The railroad has improved management processes and dining car and lounge service as well as infrastructure projects leading to improved reliability, all of which has led to a savings of $61.3 million. In February of 2008 Amtrak launched its most recent initiative, a significant increase in security that involves deployment of mobile security teams and random baggage inspection.
