Abstract: The paper presents a general view of road maintenance in Tanzania and the problems confronting maintenance operations. Two road improvement programmes, one for trunk roads and another for rural feeder roads, are examined and the organisational and operational aspects of each are discussed. As road maintenance in Tanzania has lagged behind other developments this has created a problem in the overall development of the country as transportation is important in supporting social and economic activities. Details are given of methods that have been adopted to implement the improvement programmes including training of road maintenance personnel and implementation of trunk road maintenance financing.
