Title: COMPLEXITY AND ACTIVITY-BASED TRAVEL ANALYSIS AND MODELING. IN: IN PERPETUAL MOTION: TRAVEL BEHAVIOR RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND APPLICATION CHALLENGES
Abstract: Within travel behavior research, urban travel modeling and forecasting is experiencing a major revolution, primarily in response to new planning and policy analysis needs. These needs are generally motivated by concerns for air quality, congestion, and sustainability. The current paradigm shift in urban travel modeling is bringing about a change in the overall approach, as well as in specific modeling techniques. In an effort to support the current trend toward development of a new generation of travel forecasting methods, this chapter presents results of a selective examination of a collection of concepts, approaches, and methods generally known as the approach. The chapter identifies areas in which these concepts and methods could be useful to travel modelers seeking the means to implement the new directions emerging in travel forecasting. The chapter concludes that the complexity approach has useful insights and methods to offer those developing new travel forecasting methods, but that there remain important issues yet to be addressed.
