Abstract: In this paper a procedure is presented to evaluate the remaining life of both flexible and semi-rigid pavement, from tests carried out with the fwd. The pavements are schematized as an elastic four layer body. For the bituminous and hydraulic bound layers, a linear elastic law was adopted whilst a non-linear elastic law was used for the unbound layers (subbase and subgrade). The behaviour of a very large number of pavements under fwd loading was analysed using a finite element model. These pavements consist of layers of different thickness and modulus, chosen from a very large range. From this analysis and using the multiple regression technique it was possible to find analytical functions between deflections and moduli. The developed procedure permits an evaluation of the pavement layers moduli using these functions and the deflections measured under the fwd load (pastrev program). A bituminous layer fatigue distress model was also developed that takes into account the crack propagation. This model permits an evaluation of the allowable load applications related to different pavement surface cracking stages. The input required is the tensile strain at the bottom of the bitumen bound layers. The stress/strain distribution induced by the traffic loads was calculated with a finite element program (nolap) that uses the pavement layer's mechanical characteristics (obtained as described above) as input. Using these models it is possible to forecast the pavement condition evolution and to determine the pavement deterioration curve (cracked area vs number of load applications).
