Abstract: This chapter discusses the transcendental functions. The functions that include the trigonometric functions, the logarithm function, functions of the form T(x) = 2X, and others are grouped together under the general heading of transcendental functions and are classified as non-algebraic functions. Logarithms are defined in elementary algebra to be exponents. The logarithm of a positive number N to a base b, that is any positive number not 1, is said to be that exponent r that raises b to the number N. Many handbooks contain tables that give the values of E(x) = ex for different values of x. However, no handbooks give a similar table of values of the function F(x) = xx. The reason is that the first function comes up over and over in the applications of mathematics. On the other hand, the second function does not often appear. For the same reason, the first function has a universally recognized name, the exponential function, whereas no name has been given to the second function.
