In forwards referential dependencies where the pronoun or reflexive follows its referent, the search for an antecedent involves a search in memory, whereas in the case of a cataphoric pronoun the existence of the pronoun signals to the parser that a referent is needed, allowing it to evaluate potential referents as they are encountered in the following discourse. The current paper examines the extent to which the adult and child parser make use of structural information to anticipate whether an upcoming referent might be a suitable referent for the cataphoric pronoun, even before the potential referent is encountered.Read More
