Title: Recent UK Experience of the Influence of Regulation on Performance
Abstract: Experience gained from past practice is useful since it can help inform policymakers as to future directions. However, the British bus industry is poised to pass into a new era by the abolition of road service licensing, i.e. deregulating route and quantity control. The 1985 Transport Act intends to restructure the industry and as well. The intention of deregulation is to eliminate damaging cross-subsidy and reduce revenue support by the rigors imposed through competition on the road. This paper will review recent experience and events and the circumstances that shaped them. The outgoing regulatory system will be described and an examination of the recent performance of various sectors of the British bus industry is presented.
