Title: THE STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE OF GRAVEL PAVEMENTS AT TWO LOCATIONS ON NATIONAL PRIMARY ROADS
Abstract: The report records the performances of road pavements consisting of surface dressed gravel constructed at two locations on national primary roads, prior to being overlaid as part of a stage construction strategy. On one site the surface dressed gravel carried traffic for about 5 years before overlaying; on the other site the overlay was applied after 10 months. The report gives details of the construction of the road pavements, and describes the subgrade soils and the materials used in construction. The performance of the pavements under traffic was assessed on the basis of measurements of permanent surface deformation and transient deflection, and visual observations. The quality of gravel used on both sites was considered good. On one site (r1) the gravel gave good performance for about 5 years, during which it carried traffic equivalent to about 2 million standard axles. On the other site (r25) the pavement was overlaid after 10 months, during which it carried traffic equivalent to about 0.6 million standard axles. The difference in the performance of the gravel pavements on the two sites was primarily due to differences in construction technique. The performance of the pavements on site r1 indicates that where stable gravels are compacted and surface dressed in accordance with the best engineering practice, they can successfully carry up to 2 million standard axles before requiring an overlay.
