Abstract: This book grew out of a conference held in the Fall of 1973 on the subject of the contribution of anthropology U.S. public policy. Its avowed purpose is to offer an intellectual perspective [on fieldwork and theory] that might be useful those students and professionals who wish expand their knowledge so that they can operate effectively outside of academe. collection of nineteen papers is divided into: Anthropologists' role; The U.S. public culture: attitudes, themes and behavior; The issues of language; and Government and policy. Sanday's brief introduction skims the selections and does a slight as well as uneven job of linking the varied contributions that follow. It concludes by citing some remarks by then-Senator Walter Mondale concerning research findings of scholars:
