The survey was part of a technical feasibility study of HOV lanes along the length of an on-going 10-mile widening project adding a fourth lane in each direction to a heavily traveled I-80. About 72% of those surveyed favored HOV lanes. However, support for HOV lanes decreased when respondents were questioned about the possibility of actual implementation of an HOV Lane on I-80. This underscored the value placed on the automobile and personal freedom that is associated with driving. It is noted that if HOV lanes are implemented, a major educational effort must be launched to demonstrate that the lanes can benefit everyone by reducing the total number of vehicles on the road.Read More
