Title: Elementary school: quality control for Finnish RWIS
Abstract: The Finnish Road Administration (Finnra) has developed an extensive Road Weather Information System (RWIS) for winter road maintenance use. It consists of 360 road weather stations and 260 cameras. Radar and satellite images from weather service providers are also used. Due to outsourcing, almost all of the data's users are now outside Finnra. In 2002, a project for developing a Quality Management System for RWIS data was set up to harmonise the RWIS so that the quality of the information is similar in the whole country. A quality manual for the road weather system was produced and the quality system was awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification. The benefits of the quality system are outlined.
