Abstract: Since the move to the metric system was accelerated in this country a few years ago, there has been considerable comment about the importance of common fractions in the elementary school. Some of what has been said is nonsense, but some perfectly sensible comments about the need for emphasis on decimals have led some people to the erroneous conclusion that fractions are going to be out of date. It is true that in the metric system most measurements are expressed in decimal notation. That is also true of our monetary system. But the notion that fractions are any less important because of the use of decimal notation in the metric system is based on a superficial view of fraction concepts and the mistaking of certain manipulations of fractions for the substance of fractional operations.
