Title: Seattle Brings Streetcar Past Back to the Future
Abstract: Seattle is bringing back streetcars, which debuted in the 1800s in the city, found a new life again in the 1980s, and are now poised to be extended on the South Lake Union line. The line will be serving the area immediately north of Seattle's central business district, where 15,000 to 23,000 new jobs and 8,000 to 10,000 new housing units are expected to be created over the next 15 years. Project facts include a 1.3 mile route each way, connections to light rail, regional buses and monorail at Westlake, modern streetcar vehicles that carry up to 140 passengers, 11 stops every two to three blocks, with an automated arrival time system and ridership projects at 330,000 passengers the first year, growing to more than 1 million per year over time. Feasibility, design and construction schedules are described.
