Title: DETERMINATION OF EFFECTIVE SOIL RESILIENT MODULUS AND ESTIMATION OF LAYER COEFFICIENTS FOR UNBOUND LAYERS OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT IN RHODE ISLAND
Abstract: The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) published the Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (AASHTO Guide) in 1986, and updated it in 1993. Effective soil resilient modulus and pavement layer coefficients have been identified as two parameters essential to use the AASHTO Guide in Rhode Island. In order to determine the effective soil resilient modulus, seasonal effects were studied. A series of laboratory resilient modulus tests were performed on two granular subgrade soils at four temperatures and three moisture contents using the testing procedure developed at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Prediction equations were developed to determine resilient moduli under Rhode Island environmental and field conditions. Layer coefficients for granular subbase materials were estimated using the method described in the AASHTO Guide. The coefficients ranged from 0.08 to 0.14. The average is 0.11 for the eight subbase materials tested. To verify laboratory test results, the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing was also performed at four sites, with different pavement cross sections and climatic conditions over a one year period. Laboratory determined resilient moduli of subbase materials and subgrade soils were compared with backcalculated moduli determined using FWD deflection data. Generally, backcalculated moduli were higher than laboratory determined ones for both subgrade soils and subbase materials.
