Title: Discussion of “Deformation of Sand in Shear”
Abstract: LOADING TESTS WHICH IMPOSE A NONHOMOGENEOUS STRESS STATE ON SOIL SAMPLES ARE OBJECTIONABLE IN STRESS-STRAIN RESEARCH. THE QUALITY OF THE SOIL TEST BOX ON THIS ACCOUNT IS OPEN TO QUESTION. THE WRITER PRESENTED ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE NUMERICALLY SUBSTANTIATING GREEN'S CONCLUSIONS FOR THE SPECIFIC CASE OF TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION. THE REALIBILITY OF THE DATA AND THE INTERPRETATIONS REPORTED BY THE AUTHORS IS THOUGHT TO DECREASE WITH SHEARING STRESS FROM THE HYDROSTATIC STATE AND IS PROBABLY DEPENDENT IN A LARGE DEGREE UPON THE STRESS PATH. IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE ARCHING EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH EDGE RESTRAINT WOULD PRIMARILY DEPEND UPON THE DIRECTION OF GRAIN MOVEMENT ADJACENT AND WITH RESPECT TO THE SPACING FRAME. THE APPARENT STIFFNESS OF MEDIUM DENSE OTTOWA SAND SUBJECTED TO APPRECIABLE SHEARING STRESSES SEEMS UNREASONABLY HIGH. THE AUTHORS' TREATMENT OF FAILURE VERSUS YIELD COULD BE PHYSICALLY CLARIFIED IF THE DISCONTINUITIES IN THE STRESS DEFORMATION CURVES ACTUALLY REPRESENTED THE OCCURRENCE OF LOCAL YIELDING VERY CLOSE TO THE SPACING FRAME. THE DISCONTINUITY COULD BE REGARDED SIMPLY AS THE RESULT OF STRESS CONCENTRATION AND WOULD CERTAINLY NOT REFLECT A TRUE STRESS-STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF SAND. THE AUTHORS' ATTEMPTS TO BETTER DEFINE THE STRESS- STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF A PARTICULAR OTTOWA SAND ARE COMMENDABLE. THE NEWLY DEVELOPED STRESS CONTROL DEVICE SEEMS WELL SUITED TO THE TASK WHILE THE SOIL TEST BOX DOES NOT. REFERENCES: DEFORMATION OF SAND IN SHEAR, HON-YIM KO, RONALD F. SCOTT, ASCE, (PROC.
