Title: Share Where: Getting the Best Out of Geographic Information Systems
Abstract: This article gives an overview of various transportation-related applications for geographic information systems (GIS). By enabling traffic information to be linked or related to a location or geographic area, traffic information can be visualized graphically and readily understood on a map. Transportation authorities can use GIS in travel demand modeling, highway network forecasting, route selection, emergency response, or in numerous other decision making processes. Included in the article is a sidebar describing how GIS is being used in a program known as StreetMapper for mobile mapping applications, thus replacing traditional manual surveying techniques. The article concludes with a look at future uses for GIS.
