Abstract: THE MOVEMENT OF COMMUTERS TRAVELLING TO WORK OR TO SCHOOL BETWEEN AND WITHIN COMMUNITIES TO A LARGE EXTENT GOVERNS THE PEAK TRAFFIC ON WORKING DAYS AND - ESPECIALLY IN LARGE CITIES AND OTHER AREAS OF HIGH TRAFFIC DENSITY - OFTEN BURDENS TRAFFIC SYSTEMS BEYOND THE LIMITS OF THEIR CAPACITY. BECAUSE OF THE GREAT IMPORTANCE OF COMMUTER TRAFFIC THE PRESENT STUDY PRESENTS AN ANALYSIS OF ITS STRUCTURES. THE CLASSIFICATION OF COMMUTERS ACCORDING TO CATEGORIES, RELATIONS, USE OF PARTICULAR MODES OF TRAFFIC ETC IS PRESENTED GRAPHICALLY. THE DATA FOR THIS INVESTIGATION WERE TAKEN FROM THE 1970 CENSUS OF POPULATION. OF THE TOTAL OF 35.68 MILLION COMMUTERS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY 42.1% DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF TRANSPORT AT ALL, 23.6% TRAVEL BY PUBLIC SERVICES AND 34.3% HAVE THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL MEANS OF TRANSPORT.
