Title: PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LOCAL BUS SERVICES COMPARED: THE CASE OF NEW YORK CITY
Abstract: Six private bus companies provide local service in New York City, primarily in the Borough of Queens, with some local and express service in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and express service to various areas in Manhattan. Advocates and providers of private local bus services are generally convinced that they provide better and more efficient service than do the public authorities. This study, after reviewing statistics that confirm their lower cost provision of service in New York City, seeks to determine whether it is a result of their private ownership or of other characteristics.
