Title: Modeling Driver Behavior on Narrow Freeway Lanes: State of the Art and Model Development
Abstract: Freeway Operations SIMulation (FOSIM) is a dynamic microscopic simulation tool which has been developed and successfully applied to predict freeway bottleneck capacity, given its geometric design, traffic demand and traffic composition. This paper presents an important generalization of the model, making it suitable to predict traffic flow operations for new geometric designs, such as peak hour lanes, and so-called plus lanes. Additionally, the model can predict the impact of lane width, e.g. used in case of road works, on traffic flow operations. It is shown that the predicted conditions (e.g. capacities, speeds) are plausible. The model is relatively simple in terms of the number of parameters that have been added to the original model. The sensitivity analysis furthermore shows the model’s sensitivity to its parameters.
