Abstract: The air pollutants which negatively impact the forests of the eastern USA are lsited and discussed. The sources and the effects of each are described. Symptoms of specific pollutant injury on different species are discussed. Among the pollutants discussed are: sulfur dioxide, oxidants, fluorides, ethylene, oxides of nitrogen, ammonia, chlorine and hydrochloric acid, and particulates. Environmental factors which can mimic the symptoms of air pollution injury are identified and discussed. Among them are: temperature extremes, water excess or deficiency, nutrient deficiencies, and diseases.
