Title: PASSENGER TRANSPORT: PUTTING IT TO WORK. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE OF THE SAME NAME HELD IN APRIL 1992. CHAPTER 2. LAND USE/TRANSPORT STRATEGIES: THE PRACTICAL ROLE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Abstract: This paper looks at two recent strategic transport planning studies in which public transport has played an essential role. In the first study Serplan prepared a rail investment strategy as part of the promotion of the regional planning strategy. Details are given of the recommendations made which aimed to encourage economic resurgence and rail usage. The author then outlines 'A Transport Plan for Surrey' which translates some of the county's structure plan policies into action. Measures involving public transport are listed including: improvements to customer information and facilities; a campaign to increase awareness of bus/rail links; bus priority; more park and ride schemes; and deals with developers. In considering the relationship between land use and transport the author does not foresee a noticeable reduction in travel demand. Public transport is however an important tool in demand management and should be given greater importance in the planning process. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 857377.
