Title: A Watchful Eye: The When, Where, and How of Real-Time Health-Monitoring
Abstract: This article looks at recent developments in real-time remote monitoring systems and how railroads and shippers are using them to operate more efficiently and safely. The shipment of hazardous materials (hazmat) on railroad cars is one area where remote monitoring systems are in demand. These systems offer sensing capabilities such as chlorine sensors or sensors that can detect other anomalies like open hatches. Another area for remote monitoring system applications is in friction control management. The real-time monitoring of wayside lubricators helps railroads deal with friction control at the rail/wheel interface. Finally, the article discusses how railroads can keep track of battery voltage, coolant temperature, engine hours, and fuel levels through Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled locomotive monitoring units.
