Abstract: The UK Government has proposed a 15 percent cut in excise duty on used as a road to encourage a change to the use of gas bringing environmental benefits of reduced transport pollution. The author argues that this reduction would not allow for the costs of converting vehicles nor the additional cost of new gas vehicles. It is suggested that a cut in duty of 70 percent is needed to ensure long-term viability of a gas-powered vehicle market. Examples are given to show the environmental advantages of gas over petrol or diesel as a fuel for transport. The logic behind the argument for conversion to natural gas power is summarised. It is claimed that natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 882649.
