Title: CURRENT SLOPE STABILITY STUDIES BY THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION, CALIFORNIA
Abstract: THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY IS STUDYING THE SLOPE STABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION. AS PART OF A REGIONAL PLANNING PROJECT IN COOPERATION WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND THE ASSOCIATION OF BAY AREA GOVERNMENTS, SEVERAL TYPES OF SLOPE STABILITY STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. MAPS (SCALE 1:62,500) SHOW- ING THE DISTRIBUTION OF LANDSLIDE DEPOSITS IN THE BAY REGION ARE BEING PREPARED. A NEW TECHNIQUE WHICH PHOTOMECHANICALLY DIFFUSES CONTOUR LINES HAS BEEN USED TO PRODUCE SLOPE MAPS OF SELECTED AREAS. ANOTHER TYPE OF MAP DEVELOPED BY THE STUDY IS A LANDSLIDE- SUSCEPTIBILITY MAP WHICH SHOWS THE AVERAGE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SLOPE-MATERIAL UNITS TO MASS MOVEMENT. THE SLOPE STABILITY STUDIES ARE PROVIDING BASIC INFORMATION NEEDED BY LAND-USE PLANNERS IN THE BAY REGION.
