Title: EXPERIMENTS FOR PRACTICAL USE OF DRIVING SAFETY SUPPORT SYSTEMS OF UTMS
Abstract: The aim of the Driving Safety Support System (DSSS) is to enhance the vehicle traffic safety and reduce accidents. It has been developed with coordination of the advanced function of traffic control infrastructure and intelligent vehicles. DSSS is one of the subsystems of UTMS (Next Generation Traffic Management Systems) primarily promoted by the National Police Agency and Universal Traffic Management Society of Japan. DSSS has been developed based on the analysis of the accident occurrence factors. The basic examination (first phase) of the subsystem of the infrastructure alone has been completed. Verification tests at intersections without traffic signals and intersections with traffic signals were begun in September 2000 to enable practical use as early as possible. According to the test results, the significance of the system was verified and an outlook of developing sensors has also been clarified. Consequently, significant results were achieved concerning practical use of the system.
