Title: How Good Data Lead to Better Safety Decisions
Abstract: Good safety data can help state departments of transportation (DOTs) make better highway safety decisions. However, DOTs must consider if the benefits of collecting new data outweighs the often-considerable costs. This article discusses some of the national data and analysis efforts that have been developed to help states in their safety data efforts. Many recent efforts have focused on the improvement of noncrash safety data, such as roadway inventory and traffic information. The article also highlights the experience of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) in collecting enhanced roadway and traffic data and using new decision-support tools in its safety management efforts. Ohio has experienced better safety decisions as a result of using the enhanced data and a data analysis tool. In addition, Ohio also has experienced several benefits unrelated to safety such as improved traffic control operations and capacity analysis modeling from using the enhanced data.
