Abstract: This chapter covers various aspects of an engineering design report, which are used to communicate the solution of a design problem, usually to the boss or a colleague. The report should be written for a person of equal or greater competence than the writer. The report should be self-contained, except for references to other specific documents, such as contracts, drawings, textbooks, and standards. The report must contain all the information needed for someone to check how the writer arrived at a recommended solution. The use of analysis to demonstrate that a design will actually solve a problem is essential. This needs to be clearly set out in the documentation. The suggested structure of design documentation includes a summary, development of a model, and design calculations. The first step in an engineering design is to be able to conceptualize the problem in a way that allows standard methods of analysis to be used. Design calculations prove that a particular design will work as it should, and it consists mostly of small sketches and steps in solving equations.
