Title: Experimental quantification of bone mechanics
Abstract: Design of bone substitute biomaterials requires an understanding of how bone behaves mechanically at different scales. In this chapter, common experimental methods that are used to measure bone mechanical properties at the whole-bone scale, micrometre scale and sub-micrometre scale are detailed. Special attention is given to the governing principles behind the methods, the properties that are measured by these methods, the measurement protocols and the associated limitations. Current scientific knowledge of bone mechanical characteristics at each scale is reviewed. Results are presented for the wrist, spine and hip, which are sites of high fracture risk and relevant for bone substitute biomaterials design.
