Title: Expert Systems: Automated Decision Support for Clinical Nursing Practice
Abstract: In recent years, rapid advances in data processing technology have made available new tools to assist in decision making. The more powerful of these tools rely on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to extend and augment the problem solving capabilities of the user. The questions facing our profession are whether or not these tools are applicable to clinical nursing practice and, if so, how we should proceed in integrating them into clinical nursing practice. This paper will focus on one of these tools, expert systems, and its relation to clinical nursing practice. In particular, it addresses within this context: The current state of expert systems and the nursing knowledge base, The use of nursing models in expert system development, The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in the development of expert systems, and The ethical and legal considerations in the applications of expert systems.
