Title: SUMMARY REPORT ON HEAVY WATER, NATURAL URANIUM LATTICE RESEARCH
Abstract: The nuclear properties of subcritical lattices of partially enriched uranium rods in heavy water are experimentally and theoretically investigated. The measurement methods discussed are being improved where possible and are presentiy being applied to lattices of 0.25-inch diameter rods of uranium containing 1.03% uranium-235 at different lattice spacings. In addition to the steady-state methods described, pulsed-neutron studies of reactivity were started. Studies are being continued, in the small subcritical assembly, on miniature lattices of 0.25-inch diameter rods containing 1.143% uranium-235. Two-region exponential experiments with the slightly enriched uranium rods are under way. Investigations of neutron distributions in and around single rods of 1.0-inch diameter, natural uranium rods are in progress. Theoretical methods are being applied to lattices of slightly enriched rods, extended where necessary to handle tighter lattices of small diameter rods. When data are obtained over a wider range of enrichments, diameters, and volume ratios, an overall study of the theory of heavy water lattices will be made. (N.W.R.)
