Abstract: Chapter 1 presents nanoengineering as a unifying field that intersects several disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology, and diverse areas of engineering. It highlights the influence of nanoscale effects in everyday applications, such as microchips, medicine, advanced materials, and energy solutions, inviting students to understand the tangible impact of their education. The chapter focuses on the interconnectedness of scientific disciplines, explaining the relationship between nanoengineering and other sciences and engineering fields, and its potential to revolutionize traditional boundaries of knowledge. It introduces many fundamental concepts in the field, including “flask” and “wafer” nanoengineering, potential energy, and light–matter interactions.
