Abstract: Wie die Finanzierung des Wahlkampfes werden auch andere Kampagnenbereiche durch den Aufbau der US-Parteien geprägt. Denn die amerikanischen Parteien haben kaum geregelten Mitgliedsstrukturen. „Es bestehen keine Verfahrensregeln oder Zeremonien für den Beitritt. Es gibt in der Regel keine Mitgliedschaft.(…), sie erhebt keine Beiträge (obgleich gelegentlich Anstrengungen gemacht worden sind, ein System regelmäßiger Beitragszahlungen einzuführen), sie hat keine Statuten, die sie durchzusetzen in der Lage ist und keine Mittel, ein Mitglied zu maßregeln, außer, dass es die Partei ablehnt, es zu unterstützen, wenn es sich um ein öffentliches Amt bewirbt.“ Deshalb können sich die Kandidaten im Präsidentschaftswahlkampf bei der Basisarbeit nicht auf freiwillige Helfer in den Orts-oder Kreisverbänden ihrer Partei verlassen, so wie das beispielsweise in Deutschland der Fall ist. Trotzdem spielt der Wahlkampf vor Ort eine große Rolle: „Nach wie vor überzeugt ein persönliches Gespräch einen Wähler eher als ein 30-Sekunden-Spot im Fernsehen oder Radio. Der Einsatz von Wahlhelfern, die von Tür zu Tür gehen, kann eine der wirksamsten Formen politischer Kommunikation sein.“
