Abstract: Abstract We lay out the argument for why we need more democratic schools globally. We introduce the questions for the entire book and the framework we have developed which has four corresponding pillars. These are as follows: Democratic education emphasizes the open flow of ideas and choices, regardless of their popularity. Democratic education is a high-quality equitable education and is accessible to and inclusive of all people. Democratic education contributes to the “common good” through active engagement, consensus, and compromise. Democratic schools organize students, parents, social institutions, and the larger community collaboratively to achieve its goals and to solve theirs and society’s most urgent challenges.
