These were the words of Saint Peter to Jesus Christ while fleeing persecution of Christians in Rome under Nero's empire. Then, Jesus replied ‘I am going to Rome to be crucified for a second time.’ This made Saint Peter realize his cowardliness and returned to Rome to face the persecutions with other Christians. –from the Apocryphal of the New Testament. On this premise, the phrase ‘Quo Vadis’ is a reflection of one’s purpose in life or of what direction is one’s actions. Institutional arbitration in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa like in other regions globally is used to resolve disputes through an arbitration institution, with laid down rules to administer the proceedings. However, parties to disputes where they resort to arbitration to reach settlement often prefer ad hoc arbitration over institutional arbitration. This brought forth the question; of what purpose and to which direction (Quo Vadis) is the strengthening of the legislative framework for institutional arbitration in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa? Therefore, this paper will begin with what institutional arbitration is all about in contradistinction with ad hoc arbitration, assess the historical development of institutional arbitration, examine major arbitration institutions with their legislative framework across the globe, peruse the legislative framework for institutional arbitration in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa alongside their various arbitration institutions and discuss how to strengthen institutional arbitration in the region towards a prospective direction for the same in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.
