Abstract: The Munlq.ara is available in four printed editions.JOThe author I:Iasan (al-I:Iasan) b.Al).mad b. c Abd Allah al-I;>amadi al-Tihami, known as c Akish, was born probably at I;>amad in Tihamat al-Yaman in late 122111807.llHe appears to have come from a locally prominent family since his father served as qa(j"i at I;>amad.The father, Al).mad b. c Abd Allah (b.1174Allah (b./1760-61, d. -61, d.Rabic II 1222/June-July 1807) himself spent two periods of study in ~anca~, on the second occasion with the famous Mul).ammad b. c AU al-Shawkanil2 who was later to write a treatise for him in response to certain questions.13Among the son's teachersl4 was c Abd al-Ral).manal-BahkaU,15 himself a onetime student of both Shawkani and c Aki sh' s father.From 1238/1822-23, thus at the age of about fourteen, c Akish studied with Bahkali in Bayt al-Faqih where the latter held the positions of qafil and J:iaklm.16He later moved to Zabid where he studied with AhdaJ,17 cutumi18 and Mul).ammad c A.bid al-Sindi.19c Akish, still a very young man, seems to have spent the years 1240 to 1242/1824-26 in Mecca, where he studied Tradition with several teachers including Mul).ammad Yasin b. c Abd Allah al-Mirghani,20 one of the most prominent teachers in the holy city of the day.Mirghani was the uncle, guardian and first teacher of lbn Idris' student Mul).ammadcUthman al-Mirghani.21Given that we do not have a precise chronology for this period of lbn Idris' life, it is uncertain whether c Akish met either lbn Idris or his student 10 ALA.I, l48f.11 The following is based on Mul:iammad b.Mul:
