Title: Hidden Protagonists – towards a decolonial cinema history in Brazil
Abstract: This article aims to further the discussion about the need to decolonize Brazilian audiovisual historiography, drawing attention to the fact that evaluations and choices of films and filmmakers end up forming a white and, therefore, hegemonic narrative, still embedded in the asymmetrical structure of colonial power and the subsequent subalternation of the Other. The main objective of the article is to contribute to the awareness of the negative or limited representation of indigenous, African, and Afro-descendant characters by presenting existing studies, especially on canonical feature films that are based on the portraits and myths developed in art and literature, as well as pointing to the notorious absence of indigenous and Afro-descendant filmmakers.
