This was a significant development in the history of English prose fiction, and it produced in Sir Thomas Malory one of the greatest writers of English prose. His work certainly towers above the achievements of others in this genre, but the other prose romances do not deserve to be consigned to oblivion. Our necessarily selective account will in this chapter consider a number of examples which probably pre-date Malory and Malory’s own work; the two subsequent chapters will treat those written later, and some shorter fictional tales.Read More
