Abstract: Abstract The first reach outward for learned helplessness was toward depression, and to this day it remains the theory’s most thoroughly researched application. This chapter’s discussion of depression is divided into four parts. First, we describe it: what kinds there are and how to recognize them. Second, we take a look at the reformulated learned helplessness theory as it applies to depression. Third, we discuss the new evidence suggesting that modernity has brought an epidemic of depression in its wake. How does helpless ness theory illuminate this evidence? Finally, we describe several issues of controversy surrounding the application of learned helplessness to depression.
