Abstract: Diadromous fishes, such as lampreys, sturgeons, eels, herrings, and salmons, migrate between freshwater and seawater environments, which present drastically different osmoregulatory challenges to which these fishes must be adapted. This article briefly introduces the various forms of diadromy and current hypotheses on how diadromous life histories may have evolved. This article describes in greater detail the life cycle of anadromous fishes, and the physiological adaptations that anadromous fishes exhibit to survive transitions between freshwater and marine environments.
