Title: Male mate choice and intrasexual competition
Abstract: Abstract This chapter deals briefly with two other issues that, together with female mate choice, make up the subject of sexual selection. The first is mate choice by male birds. In contrast to female mate choice, this subject has received little attention. The second topic, intrasexual competition for mates and matings, is widely recognized as extremely important in the lives of vertebrate animals. Nevertheless, it too has received far less attention than mate choice by females. Typically, such competition is among males; female-female competition, however, can also be intense in birds and is sometimes even fatally violent.
