Abstract: Abstract A drug interaction occurs when the effects of one drug are altered by the effects of another drug. We call the drug that precipitates an interaction the precipitant drug and the drug whose action is affected the object drug. A drug interaction can result in either an increased or a decreased effect of the object drug: for instance, amiodarone inhibits a cytochrome P450 isoenzyme CYP2C9, leading to reduced metabolism of S(–) warfarin and increased anticoagulant effect, whereas carbamazepine reduces the anticoagulant effect of warfarin by increasing its hepatic metabolism by cytochrome P450.
