Description: Abstract Vancomycin is the only glycopeptide antibiotic licensed for clinical use in the United States. Another glycopeptide antibiotic, teicoplanin, is currently in clinical use in Europe, where, in addition, the glycopeptide avoparcin has been used in chicken and ruminant livestock feed as a growth promoter. Vancomycin was isolated in 1956 from Streptomyces orientalis.
