Abstract: Abstract Geographic organization and social organization are often thought of as two distinct categories. But in actual practice, these two types of organization, although manifested differently, are closely related. This discussion of Roman social history begins, then, with an acknowledgment of the important role of the physical environment in the way people interacted with one another. Certainly for the Romans, the nature of a person’s everyday life was directly related to the particular kind of region or settlement in which they lived. There is a lot of evidence on this subject, archaeological and literary, that can help reconstruct the internal, physical organization of Roman society.
